What is the competition about?
Food Matters Manitoba invites you to join Manitoba’s first annual Garden Makeover competition. We’re looking for Manitobans to transform their flower gardens, front lawns, or other parts of their yard into an edible landscape. The best gardens in our province have the chance to win one of two grand prizes, each valued at $1300!
If you are a Manitoba resident planning an edible landscape garden for 2013, please consider entering it to be judged in our competition. You can enter as an individual, a family, or as a team. Both new and established gardens can compete. All you need to do to enter is to complete our application form and attach up to 6 photographs of your edible landscape (you may send 3 now with 3 later to show growth, or all 6 at once)!
Check out the people who have already submitted their gardens and edible landscapes to the 2013 competition here - and don’t forget to cast your vote for each entry to determine our Viewer’s Choice prize (see the sidebar for our current leaders).
What is an Edible Landscape?
An edible landscape is an area filled with food-producing plants that has been designed to look aesthetically pleasing. In this kind of landscaping, vegetables, herbs, fruit trees, and berry bushes take the place of ornamental plants and flowers. Edible landscapes can be created in all parts of a yard, including backyard gardens, balconies, porches, container gardens, or even in the place of a front lawn.
What are We Looking For?
We are looking for edible landscapes that excel in five areas: Artistry, Variety, Use of Space, Plant Health, and Sustainability. If your garden meets these requirements, it could be crowned Manitoba’s Best Edible Landscape! Find out all the criteria in our Rules and Regulations section.
Manitoba’s Garden Makeover is designed to promote homegrown food, sustainable living, creative gardening, and community beautification. We also encourage people to donate the surplus food they grow to help those in need through Winnipeg Harvest or Fruit Share Manitoba (find out more information about donating your food on our Learn More page). The competition is open to all Manitoba (Canada) residents, both rural and city-dwellers. A special award will also be provided for the best edible landscape by a youth (18 and under) entrant.
